Film Review: The Immaculate Room

Typically, it’s always a challenge to have a movie with only two actors carrying the film for a good portion of it, especially when the setting doesn’t change. From the very beginning, a couple, Kate (Kate Bosworth) and Mikey (Emile Hirsch) are contestants in a strange game in which they agree to spend 50 days living in a white room. If they manage to do that, the couple will win $5 million dollars, if for some reason one of them chooses to leave the room prior to 50 days, the prize money drops to $1 million.

The room has the chilly aesthetic of a chic art gallery, and with no form of entertainment whatsoever, the couple must learn to live with boredom for 50 days. We soon learn that Kate views the money as a means to put her mind at ease after spending a life worrying about her finances, while Mikey comes from a wealthy family and it’s still unclear why the money would mean much to him other than to be supportive of his girlfriend. For most pre-lockdown people, staying in a room for 50 days would’ve seemed like an easy feat, but as lockdown made us all realize, being confined is actually much harder than it looks.

Hirsch is animated as Mikey, as he explains what he would do with the money if he were to win, or how to kill boredom he begins to read the tag on his shirt in different accents. Bosworth’s performance is more contained as her character Kate tries to keep herself together with daily affirmations. It isn’t until the addition of external people that she gets triggered and her balance begins to tilt. The couple’s shut-in world begins to shake the moment Simone (Ashley Greene Khoury) enters the room, which sparks jealousy and tension to rise between the couple. It doesn’t take long for the ugly emotions to surface for it to bring things to a head.

The film begins with a study on boredom and if it’s possible to be driven mad by it, but it quickly devolves into the malice of greed and how far would one go to keep the prize in question. Again, for being a film that focuses mostly on two characters and one location, the script was interesting, although this film is less Squid Games than I had anticipated and ends on a positive note.

The movie is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

Review: The Twilight Effect Podcast/YouTube Series

In November 2008 two phenomena happened: Obama became the first Black American President, and Twilight was released and began a billion-dollar franchise and vampire obsession unseen since Interview with the Vampire. Unless you were living under a rock, everyone knew about Twilight whether or not you watched the movies.

I’ll admit that I didn’t check the film out until 2010, stuck in bed with a gnarly fever and wondering what the hype was all about. Sure, the film was campy AF, and the vampires weren’t your typical vamps (no fangs, no killing, sparkles galore), but it had a killer soundtrack hot blokes, and an epic love story, so it was entertaining.

Ashley Greene as Alice Cullen (2008)

Now, 14 years later, Ashley Greene (the quirky Alice Cullen) is trying to figure out how this film has affected both her costars and fans in her new Podcast/YouTube series, The Twilight Effect with her best friend and Twihard fan, Melanie Howe.

The Podcast/YouTube series is part film commentary, part trivia, and part reminiscing. For those who are hardcore fans, they will love this series, however, even people who weren’t as hardcore fans can find this Podcast fun as the two hosts are funny and charming. Ashley Greene has a knack for keeping the convo going that would make her an excellent candidate for having her own talk show someday.

The episodes are a little chaotic, but the chemistry between Ashley and Melanie makes for a fun dynamic to listen/watch.

Listening to this podcast is like having a conversation with old friends, meaning you’ll be laughing along with the two hosts and in a time when we need more laughter in our lives, this is a welcomed source of levity.

You can check out the series both on YouTube and anywhere you love to listen to podcasts on! New episodes are up every Tuesday.

Secrets to Gorgeous Hair!

ash80

We all know that one girl, ya know, the one with the incredible locks, who has no bad hair days, ala Blake Lively or Megan Fox. Instead of getting hair envy, you too can achieve luscious, shiny locks with some secret ingredients that you may already have lying around your home! Beautiful hair shouldn’t be unattainable, so read below for some tips and tricks on how to get that perfect mane!

Next time you lather, think about adding these key ingredients in your shampoo:

Take one cup of baby shampoo (I prefer Honest) and mix in the following ingredients depending on your hair type:

If you have dry hair:

2 tablespoons olive or coconut oil or 1 egg

If you have oily hair:

2 tablespoons lemon juice or aloe vera gel

If you have normal hair:

¼ cup beer or flat champagne

Is product build-up causing your hair to be flat and dull? Then consider this trick:

Rinse your hair with ½ cup baking soda dissolved in 2 cups of warm water. What this does is remove all the product build up you have in your hair, such as hair spray, dry shampoo, or serums.

Are you suffering from dandruff? Then this trick is for you:

Rinse your hair with 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of warm water. The vinegar will help zap away any oils and shed those dreaded flakes for good!

Let me know if you try any of these tricks or let me know some of yours in the comments below!
